Your body needs time to process alcohol. On average, blood alcohol concentration, or BAC, falls by about 0.015 percentage points per hour after it reaches its highest level.1 People sometimes describe this as roughly one standard drink per hour, although your actual timing may differ.
For example, someone whose BAC reaches 0.08% could need about five to six hours after that peak for it to return to zero. Someone who drank heavily late at night may still have alcohol in their system the next morning, even if they slept, drank coffee, and feel more alert.
Feeling sober and having no alcohol left in your body are not the same thing. Blood and breath tests may detect alcohol for several hours, while certain urine tests can show evidence of drinking days later.
This article explains how your body processes alcohol, how long different tests may detect it, and when concerns about sobering up may connect to a larger drinking problem.
Your liver clears alcohol gradually, and coffee, food, water, exercise, or sleep cannot make it work faster.
General detection windows include:
- Blood: several hours, sometimes up to about 12 hours
- Breath: several hours and potentially into the next day
- Saliva: up to about 12 hours
- Standard urine test: about 12 to 24 hours
- EtG or EtS urine test: about two to five days
- Hair test: approximately 90 days
How your body processes alcohol
After you drink, alcohol passes through your stomach and small intestine and enters your bloodstream. Your blood then carries it to your brain and the rest of your body, which is why alcohol can quickly affect coordination, judgment, mood, and reaction time.
Your liver handles most alcohol metabolism. It uses an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase, or ADH, to begin breaking alcohol into substances your body can eventually remove.2
You can think of the liver as working through a line of drinks. When you drink faster than your liver can process the alcohol, the line gets longer and your BAC rises.
A standard drink contains about the same amount of pure alcohol whether it comes from:
- 12 ounces of regular beer
- 5 ounces of wine
- 1.5 ounces of distilled spirits2
The size and strength of the drink matter, though. A strong 16-ounce craft beer may contain more than two standard drinks, while a cocktail made with several shots can contain even more. Someone who says they had “three drinks” may have consumed the equivalent of five or six standard drinks without realizing it.
Researchers often use an average BAC reduction of about 0.015 percentage points per hour.1 At that rate:
- A BAC of 0.03% could take about two hours to return to zero.
- A BAC of 0.08% could take roughly five to six hours.
- A BAC of 0.15% could take about 10 hours.
These are only examples. They should not be used to decide whether it is safe to drive because alcohol clearance varies, and BAC may continue rising for a period after the last drink.
You may also see references to an alcohol half-life of four to five hours. A half-life generally describes how long it takes the body to reduce a substance by half. Alcohol does not clear as predictably as many medications, so this number cannot tell you exactly when you will be sober or test negative.
Coffee may help you feel awake, and water may ease dehydration, but neither one lowers BAC. Food can slow how quickly alcohol enters your blood when you eat before or while drinking, but it does not help your liver remove alcohol faster once it is there.

How long is alcohol detectable by test type?
The answer depends on what the test measures. Blood, breath, and saliva tests usually look for alcohol that is still present in your body. EtG, EtS, and hair tests look for signs that your body processed alcohol at an earlier time.
For example, someone might drink on Saturday night and feel sober by Sunday morning. A breath test may no longer detect alcohol later that day, but an EtG urine test could still show evidence of drinking on Monday.

These windows are estimates, not exact deadlines. The amount consumed, the test’s sensitivity, the laboratory cutoff, and individual health factors can all change how long alcohol remains detectable.3
An EtG result also does not mean someone remains intoxicated. It means the test found a metabolite associated with recent alcohol exposure. That is why someone can have a BAC of zero and still test positive on an EtG urine test.
Factors that may affect how long alcohol remains in your system
Several factors influence how quickly your BAC rises and how long alcohol remains detectable.
- How much and how quickly you drank: Four drinks consumed within one hour will generally raise BAC more quickly than four drinks spread across an evening.
- Body weight and composition: Alcohol spreads mainly through body water. Two people who weigh the same may still reach different BAC levels because muscle contains more water than body fat.
- Biological sex: On average, women tend to have less body water than men of the same weight, which may lead to a higher BAC after the same amount of alcohol. Individual differences still matter.
- Age and health: Changes in body composition, liver function, and medication use can affect how strongly alcohol affects you, particularly as you get older.
- Food: Eating before or while drinking can slow absorption. It does not speed up elimination afterward.
- Hydration: Water may help with dehydration, but it does not flush alcohol from the bloodstream.
- Liver health: Since the liver handles most alcohol metabolism, liver disease can affect how the body responds to drinking.
- Medications and other substances: Alcohol can interact with prescription medications, sleep aids, anxiety medications, opioids, antihistamines, and other drugs. These combinations may increase drowsiness, impair breathing, or raise the risk of overdose.
The type of drink matters less than the amount of pure alcohol it contains. Beer, wine, and liquor all stay in your system according to the total alcohol consumed, not the name of the beverage.
Online BAC calculators may give you a rough estimate, but they cannot measure your actual BAC. They do not know the exact strength of your drinks, your body composition, your health, or your personal metabolism. A calculator should never determine whether you drive or perform another safety-sensitive task.
When drinking stops being social and starts being a problem
You may have searched for how long alcohol stays in your system because you have a test, a work obligation, or a drive ahead of you. You may also be asking because the previous night did not go as planned.

- Needing alcohol to feel normal or get through the day
